Let's Talk Female Empowerment

Female Empowerment is one of *the* trending words on the internet, and especially around International Women’s Day and other significant events this strong phrase is – and we’re so glad it is – almost everywhere, spreading its magic (or better: truth?) rapidly.

We’ve all heard, and promoted it, but what exactly does Female Empowerment mean? Where does the term come from, and why is it so important?

What is Female Empowerment?

There are many models that address the concept of Female Empowerment, and obviously many diverse perspectives on it. It is a concept that exists on many levels, from an individual to a societal dimension as well as in-between dimensions. Literally, "Female Empowerment" means empowering women. At its core, it’s about women worldwide receiving equal rights and opportunities. Female Empowerment aims to strengthen women's rights and break down social, economic, and political barriers that prevent women from reaching their full potential. It's about creating an environment where women are encouraged and supported to pursue their goals and raise their voices.

Being a worldwide social and historical phenomenon, it is a term of great importance and complexity. From what I’ve found, and my very humble opinion, Female Empowerment includes the following:

– Promoting women’s sense of self-worth

Self-determination: The ability to determine their own choices

– The right to influence social change as well as the opportunity to redefine gender roles

– Reflecting and accepting women’s viewpoints and to take them seriously

– Raising the status of women through education, awareness, literacy and training

– Focussing on the similarities women have instead of seeing each other as competition

… and many more. To me, Female Empowerment aims to achieve the freedom of pursuing desired goals, whatever they may look like. It means the ability to take control, to be active about choices and to demand opportunities.

It is a brave movement and there is no right or wrong definition to it, it is both a concept with a clear vision and a concept that is open to anyone willing to join it.

Women's Empowerment Principles

Gender equality is not only a human right but also a crucial factor for economic progress and social development. However, women worldwide are still faced with numerous challenges that limit their participation in the labor market and in society. To combat these inequalities and help companies play a more active role in empowering women, the Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) were developed. These principles are a set of seven guidelines that help companies promote gender equality and women's empowerment at work, in the market, and in the community. Essentially, they provide a framework to ensure that women are treated equally in all aspects of business life, including fair working conditions, equal pay, equal opportunities in leadership positions, and protection against discrimination and sexual harassment. Developed by UN Women and the United Nations Global Compact, these principles serve as a guide for companies committed to gender equality.

How to Empower: How You Can Empower Yourself and Other Women

Female Empowerment starts with strengthening oneself and unfolds through supporting others. It's about freeing oneself from limiting beliefs and creating an environment where women can fully realize their potential. Here are some ideas on how you can empower yourself and other women:

Empower yourself:

  • Recognize your strengths: Take time to reflect on your skills, talents, and achievements. What are you good at? What are you proud of?
  • Set goals: Define clear and achievable goals in different areas of your life. What do you want to achieve? What are your dreams?
  • Boost your confidence: Speak positively to yourself, celebrate your successes, and learn to handle criticism constructively.
  • Continue learning: Invest in your personal and professional development. Expand your knowledge and skills.
  • Set boundaries: Learn to say "no" and communicate your needs. Take care of your well-being.

Empower other women:

  • Be a mentor: Share your knowledge and experiences with other women. Support their development.
  • Offer support: Be a listening ear for other women. Listen, encourage, and offer practical help.
  • Celebrate successes: Acknowledge and celebrate other women's achievements. Show your appreciation.
  • Network: Build a strong network of women who support and inspire each other.
  • Speak out: Advocate for gender equality. Stand against discrimination and injustice.

By taking these steps, we can create a culture of support and empowerment where women can fully realize their potential and achieve their goals.
