International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on March 8 and is an important occasion to highlight the achievements of women while also drawing attention to existing challenges. In this post, you will learn everything you need to know about World Women’s Day.
Berlin is the first and so far only federal state in Germany that has recognized International Women’s Day on March 8 as a public holiday since 2019.
Let’s take a little look into the past because International Women’s Day has its roots in the women’s labor movement of the early 20th century. The first International Women’s Day was celebrated in Germany, Austria, Denmark, and Switzerland in 1911. Back then, the focus was primarily on women’s suffrage and better working conditions. In Germany, women’s suffrage was introduced in 1918. During the National Assembly elections on January 19, 1919, women were able to vote and stand for election for the first time.
Since 1977, International Women’s Day has been officially recognized by the United Nations and is celebrated worldwide every year.
Good to know: Finland was the first European country to introduce women's suffrage in 1906. In contrast, Switzerland only introduced women's suffrage in 1971.
Although women have made significant progress in many countries, the goals of gender equality are still far from being achieved. Statistics show that women worldwide still earn less than men, are underrepresented, and are more frequently victims of violence. International Women’s Day reminds us that we must continue to fight for a fairer society. The current key focuses of International Women’s Day in Germany include combating violence against women, promoting gender equality in politics and business, and demanding equal pay for equal work.
On International Women’s Day 2025, we want to encourage women worldwide to celebrate their strength and share their stories. Our World Women’s Day campaign "Together, We Grow" stands for community, inspiration, and empowerment.
We believe that inspiration is found in the small things of everyday life – and often right in our surroundings. Every woman has a unique journey shaped by experiences, challenges, and achievements. With our campaign, we want to celebrate these stories and encourage their visibility.
We introduce you to three inspiring women from the PURELEI team, who show with their strength and inspiration that change often starts small.
