Plastic Free July

July 2021 — The Challenge

Plastic Free July is a global movement encouraging people from all over the world to cut down single-use plastic usage. What is single-use plastic? And why is it bad?  The term single-use plastic refers to plastics (SUPs short) and disposables that are used only once before thrown away or recycled. The impacts of this plastic waste on the environment and our health are global and can be drastic. Single-use plastic products are more likely to end up in our seas than reusable options, and when you look at the list that I am now going to share with you, you will understand why. Here are 10 common SUP objects that are found along river banks and beaches (and, luckily, that are now tackled by the EU):

 I believe that it's crucial that we understand not only that single-use plastics & disposables are bad, but also why they are bad. We all know that for all animal species, plastic is a nightmare. They get tangled, hurt or mistake it with food. Turtles for examples loves to have some jellyfish for dinner, but can't see the difference between a jellyfish or a disposed balloon floating in the ocean. What's also important is that plastics do not biodegrade. They slowly break down into smaller pieces of plastic called microplastics (fragments of any type of plastic less than 5 mm (0.20 in) in length).  We from PURELEI will join the Plastic Free July movement and encourage our community to do so, too. It is the second year in a row that we commit ourselves, and especially our reach on Social Media, to this cause that we strongly believe in. 

Our Mauo PURELEI Movement

When we speak about our sustainability actions, we often refer to our Mauo PURELEI Movement: The term MAUŌ is made up of two basic words; mau, stability, unbroken continuity, and ō, enduring in a healthy state. It is Hawaiian for 'sustainability'. 

We wanted to create one place where we can provide detailed and transparent information for everyone who is interested in our sustainability activities and donation campaigns, as well as inspire our community to join our movement. 

We’re in this for the long-haul and we'd love for you to join us on this journey.
